A reusable agent skill can carry instructions from one team to another. The receiving team still needs to understand what those instructions assume about its files, tools and decisions.
On October 22, 2026, Anthropic announced the donation of Agent Skills to the Agentic AI Foundation under the Linux Foundation. The company describes a skill as a folder containing a SKILL.md instruction file and any supporting scripts or reference material. Its announcement proposes further work on versioned releases, a formal proposal process and security guidance. Anthropic’s Agent Skills announcement
Read the procedure from the receiving team’s position
Consider a fictional manufacturer adopting a skill that prepares a monthly production summary. The instructions expect a column called completed units. One plant records that value after inspection, while another records it when an item leaves the assembly line. The same calculation can therefore describe different stages of production.
Before using the skill, agree on what each input means. Record which file supplies the value, the period it covers and how the team handles missing or revised entries. This gives the reviewer a way to examine the resulting summary without having to infer those choices from the final prose.
Also read the supporting material. A short instruction file may depend on a script or a reference table that does much of the work. Identify who maintains those dependencies and whether the receiving team can obtain the version the procedure expects.
Test a complete task in the actual environment
Use an approved example for which the team already knows the intended result. Ask the agent to prepare the summary, then compare the figures, labels and explanations with that result. If an input is unavailable, check whether the procedure makes the gap visible.
A second example can expose an assumption that the ordinary case hides. For the manufacturer, try a reporting period with a late correction to inspected output. The team should be able to tell which version of the figure reached the summary and why.
Keep the test focused on the business task. Being able to load an instruction folder establishes a narrower fact than being able to produce an accepted monthly report. Document the steps that were actually exercised so a later reviewer understands the reach of the check.
Decide who can change the procedure
A useful shared skill has an owner who can explain its intended use and review proposed changes. If another plant needs a different definition, decide whether that belongs in a local setting, a separate version or the common procedure.
Record the change together with an example showing its effect. That makes it easier to distinguish an intentional adjustment from a discrepancy introduced during reuse. The next team should be able to see which instructions and supporting files produced the accepted result.
Make the handoff usable
Deliver the skill with the information needed to run and review it. For the production summary, that includes input definitions, the expected output and the person who resolves an ambiguous figure.
The format can help teams exchange procedural knowledge. Their adoption decision rests on whether the procedure works with their own information and produces a result someone can check.
